Preliminary exercise learner response

Coursework: Preliminary exercise feedback and LR

The preliminary exercise is a brilliant opportunity to learn or refresh the basics of filmmaking before creating your actual coursework project.

After the screening of the preliminary exercises in class, you need to create a blogpost called 'Preliminary exercise learner response' and embed your video from YouTube. Then, complete the following tasks as your feedback and learner response:

1) Type up your teacher's feedback in full plus a summary of the comments you received from other students in the class.

Teacher Feedback:

Strong use of colour scheme and logo design, they create a clear visual identity.

The lyrics on screen were effective and well-timed to the rhythm of the music.

Impressive use of a wide range of locations, which added visual interest and variety.

The editing pace matched the rhythm of the track well and maintained audience engagement.

Good cinematography and camera angles that showed technical skill and understanding of shot composition.

The concept was clear and creative, showing a good understanding of music video conventions.

EBI (Even Better If):

The artist’s performance and appearance could be stronger , more energy and confidence on screen.

Branding could be developed further (consistent style, logo integration, costume, etc.).

Include found images or extra visuals to add depth and link more clearly to the lyrics and theme of the song.

Peer Feedback Summary:

My classmates commented that the visuals matched the music well and the editing rhythm was impressive. They liked the range of locations and thought the colours and logo gave the video a professional look. Some peers mentioned that the artist performance could be more expressive and that the visuals could connect more directly to the lyrics.

2) Using a combination of your own reflection on the preliminary exercise and the feedback you were given, write three WWW bullet points and three EBI bullet points for your work.

WWW (What Went Well):

Excellent use of colour, logo, and visual branding to create a strong identity.

Effective editing pace that matched the song’s rhythm and kept the video engaging.

Varied locations and shot types demonstrated creativity and technical ability.

EBI (Even Better If):

Improve the artist performance — more confidence, expression, and energy on screen.

Develop branding consistency (fonts, outfits, locations) to strengthen the overall image.

Add visual links to lyrics (e.g., symbolic or narrative shots) to make meaning clearer.

3) How effectively did you complete the objective you laid out in your mini preliminary exercise statement of intent?

In my mini preliminary statement of intent, my goal was to create a visually engaging music video that used colour and editing to reflect the rhythm and tone of the song.

I think I achieved this effectively, the editing matched the rhythm, and the colour scheme and logo gave it a cohesive look. However, I could improve on the artist’s on-screen performance and narrative connection to fully communicate the intended meaning.

4) What have you learned from the preliminary exercise that will help you in the actual coursework project?

From this preliminary exercise, I learned:

How to balance technical elements (camera, editing, mise-en-scène) with creative storytelling.

The importance of performance and artist presence in making a music video feel authentic.

How to plan and manage multiple locations effectively to make visuals more dynamic.

The significance of branding and consistency when building an artist’s image.

This experience helped me understand how each technical choice contributes to the overall impact of a music video.

5) Now you have completed the preliminary exercise, will you change anything about your actual coursework video plan? This could include your concept, cast/actors or technical elements such as mise-en-scene, camerawork or editing.

Based on the feedback and reflection, I will make the following changes for my final coursework project:

Focus more on the artist’s performance — rehearse gestures, expressions, and confidence.

Strengthen branding by maintaining a consistent visual style (costume, logo, colours).

Incorporate symbolic visuals or narrative elements that link more clearly to the lyrics.

Experiment further with cinematography, especially camera movement and framing, to enhance the rhythm and mood.

Continue using multiple locations but ensure they fit the theme and overall aesthetic.
